What does the Bible say about covid, alright, so we’re gonna look at that today now? This is clearly what could be considered a plague of sorts. There is something here that people are gonna point to that might gender fear among God’s people, and I want to look at it right now.
Revelation chapter 6 and verse 7, we’re up in heaven. Jesus, the lamb, is breaking seals off these Scrolls and their Scrolls of judgment. Let’s look at it in chapter 6 in Revelation and verse 7 when the Lamb Brook broke the fourth seal. I heard the fourth living being say come. I looked up. I saw a horse whose color was pale green. Its rider was named Death, and his companion was the grave. These two were given authority over one-fourth of the earth to kill with the sword and famine and disease and wild animals.
Now that’s the big plague right there. A quarter of the people could it happen today. Sure, I mean, it’s prophesied is going to happen. Is it happening right now? I don’t think so. So do I need to be afraid that we’re in the middle of the apocalypse? Is the apocalypse now? I don’t think so because this is not what it looks like. It doesn’t look like this big 1/4 of all the people died.
Well, what does that mean for us? Will plagues come? Jesus said there’ll be wars and famines. All these things come in the natural progression of humanity. However, the scripture doesn’t change as far as the people of God. The people of God believe and trust in the Lord. We’re talking about the Lord, the only living God, and I do not have to be afraid because of that.
As the Apostle Paul said, well to me, living is great and dying is gain. So I’ll be here serving the Lord and his blessings, or if I leave this life, I go to be with the Lord in paradise, he said, which is far better.
So I don’t have to be afraid of anything. I don’t have to get caught up in the fear-mongering of those who would attempt to make me afraid. I don’t have to go down to the local store and buy, you know, 150 rolls of toilet paper because I think you know the flakes coming if that if you and I need 150 rolls, I’m going to be in big trouble that’s gonna be the least of my worries probably.
So here’s the thing trust in God and fear not, for the Lord is with you. Hold on to that, my friends. In the middle of the night, when you become afraid, you might even have to, I know, right turn off the TV for a while to just interrupt the onslaught constant onslaught of the more doomsday and all of that and just get your Bible out and sit down and read some scriptures and pray and talk to the Lord. You know what? He’ll put his peace in your heart, and everything will be okay.
You might have heard headlines that say coronavirus is a plague prophesied in the Bible or that it heralds the end of the world or is a biblical judgment on our societies. I want to tell you why I don’t think those headlines are helpful? Why don’t I think the virus is God’s judgment or the world’s end?
The Bible certainly does talk about plagues, famine, and Wars increasing before the end of the world or at least the end of this age. But Jesus himself is quite clear that nobody knows the date. No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven nor the Son but only the father.
In fact, Jesus advises us to ignore anyone who claims otherwise. If anyone tells us, do not believe it. Jesus points out that one way or another, we will all die. The important thing is to be ready. So maybe the Bible is making headlines for the wrong reasons. Might it have something else to offer? Like the disciples on that first Easter Saturday, the world right now is being given a Sabbath without asking for it. And we’re rediscovering the value of time with loved ones, the importance of touch in the physical world, the power of simple acts of kindness, the beauty of the natural world, and maybe a different way of valuing work.
Sabbath is supposed to draw our attention back to these things, and it means that we, like Jesus’ followers, can experience the pause that helps us reflect on what really matters.
