How Did Amba Become Shikhandi?
When King Drupada had no children, he pleased Mahadev and asked for a boon to be a son. Mahadev told her that a girl would be born here, who will later become a man.
When the time came, Drupada’s wife gave birth to a girl child. Recalling the boon of Lord Shiva, Drupada told everyone that his son was born here.
When young, King Drupada got Shiikhandi married to the daughter of Dasarnaraj Hiranyavarma. When Hiranyavarma’s daughter realized that I was married to a woman, she told her father.
Knowing this, King Hiranyavarma attacked the Panchal country. When Shikhandi, as a woman, came to know about this, she got very nervous and went into the forest with the desire to give up her life.
Shikhande got a Yaksha named Sthunakarna in the forest. Shikhandii then told him the whole story. Then she gave her masculinity to help Shikhande and assumed her femininity herself.
Yaksha said to Shiikhandi that once you prove your work, you return my manhood to me again. Shiikhandi said yes and got back to his city. King Drupada was happy to see Shikhandii in male form.
When Yaksharaj Kubera came to know about this, he cursed Sthunakarna that now he will have to live in this female form. After the death of Shikhande, you will regain your male form.
In the battle of Mahabharata, Bhishma died due to Shiikhandi. After Duryodhana had made Ashwatthama his commander in a mortal state after the war ended, Ashwatthama killed Shikhandii in a sleeping state with Mahadev’s sword.
