How Old Was Virgin Mary When She Had Jesus?

People are fond of speculations about the future, but our Holy Bible KJV does not provide information about Mary’s age. We now know that a young girl’s body is not fully prepared to give birth to a child. God knew this and would not have put Mary and Jesus in danger.

But, some Christians believe that the Virgin Mary was most likely a teen when she gave birth to Jesus Christ. The Bible does not set an age for marriage that is a minimum and the only requirement of the women having reached the stage of puberty (Ezekiel 16).

What was the age of Mary When She Had Jesus? Based on the wedding practices in the time, the Virgin Mary was probably 13-14 years old.

It is often said that Mary was just 14 or 15 when she had her baby, Jesus. But, there is no evidence to support this notion from the Bible.

Certain Bible researchers believe it was the practice of Israelite parents in the first century of Israel to organize weddings for their 13 or fourteen-year-old daughters because it was common among neighboring pagan nations.

However, if that’s the case in other countries, it is not likely to be the case with Israeli parents.

Many people mistakenly believe that they got married early because they were only alive to 40 or more, but this isn’t the case. Many babies died young or were very young before the advent of modern medicine altered the average age of people in earlier societies. In Jesus day, a healthy individual could last for between 70 and 80 years old. Similar to today, Moses stated that fact for more than 1000 years before when Jesus became a baby:

Psalms 90:10 (NWT)
Psalms 90:10 (NWT)

Numerous references in the Bible show that God believed a young person to be reaching the age of maturity at the age of 20. (Exodus 30:14 & 38:26) (Numbers 1:20 & 26:2)

Ask any father … Do you prefer your daughter to be married when she’s just 13 or 14 years old. Would you say she was capable of having a child and caring for the family and husband at that point? Any wise father would not declare that his teen daughter is ready to take on this task.

If every sensible father knows this, why should we think that God is less knowledgeable about a girl’s development in her early years than a flawed human father?

Logically, God could have handed the burden of carrying Mary only that had matured enough to take on her obligations as mother and wife.

Confused About Mary’s Age When She Gave Birth To Jesus?

I’ve heard some Christian teachers say that Mary was the mother of Jesus was 12 or 13 years old when she gave birth to Jesus, and the same kind of people will sometimes say that the apostle John was 12 or 13 years old when he was called into discipleship by Jesus.

It seems nonsensical to me. What do you think about that? I think you find that kind of indication in apocryphal writings. But I don’t think that there’s anything that we know of, at least that I know of in holy tradition, that would underscore that as being factual again it’s not something that I’ve looked into deeply.

But I’m not aware of holy tradition making a dogmatic declaration in this regard. If there’s no holy tradition to substantiate that, I certainly wouldn’t want to use the apocryphal writings to do so. Yeah, religious Jews had the practice of marrying off 12-year-olds, but God would never do that like. I’m sure you would agree with me on that, right? I mean, I think there is a difference between when people got married in ancient times and when people were married in modern times.

So there is a difference there, and the sociological implications of that are vastly different. Still, I mean, some ages transgress the bounds of all civil society, and certainly, this is true with what happened between Muhammad and Aisha? This is a marriage that was consummated at an age that is entirely unapproved inappropriate in any civilization. Things indicate that the sabbath day is no longer an effect, but Paul seems to say that it’s not wrong to keep the sabbath if you have that conviction as long as you’re not legalistic about it.

Would you say that’s your take? I think what we ought to do is look at a holistic picture with respect to the sabbath? There’s a reason that we worship on the first day of the week, and it is in honor of the resurrection of our lord and savior, Jesus Christ. This is the capstone in the arch of Christianity.

And so, I think it’s transcendentally important that we do what the early church did. We not only know this in terms of a theological deduction from the scriptures themselves. But we also know this from holy tradition. Passed on from the apostles to the apostolic fathers from the apostolic fathers to the great apologists from the great apologists to the pre and post-nice fathers and disseminated to every eucharistic assembly throughout the land.

So I think it’s important to follow the pattern taught to us by theological deduction in the holy scriptures and overtly in the holy tradition passed on to us in the modern church from ancient times. So we have a template to look back at, and I don’t think we should ever negate that template because remember it was that template that very a template that gave us holy scripture, to begin with.
