Who Was Balaam In The Bible

Balaam was a prophet who was wicked from the Bible and is notable because even though he was a prophet who was wicked but he wasn’t a false prophet. This means that Balaam did receive a message from God, and God did grant him authentic prophecies to talk about. But Balaam’s heart did not agree with God, and, in the end, he exposed his true colours by sinning against Israel by leading Israel away from God.

Balaam’s Story In The Bible

In the Bible, Balaam, the son of Beor, was once a wise man and prophet for God. However, he remained to wander and was enticed to greed, but was regarded as a servant to the Highest (Numbers 22-24).

Thus the false prophet refused to leave. Then Balak, the king Balak “came to Balaam and said, ‘This is what Balak the son of Zippor says, don’t come to me for any reason not'” (verse 16). 

The false prophet sought God whether it was okay to leave. As the man was preparing to depart, God said to him, “And God came to Balaam at night and said, If those men have come to call you, then you get up and go with them; But do according to what I tell you” (Numbers 22:20 ).

God has sent an angel to come to Balaam. The next day, Balaam got on his donkey and drove off to Moab (verse 21). He saw his donkey being slain using an iron sword and was able to get away from his path three times.

The false prophet, who did not see the angel, got furious with his donkey and beat him. “Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth” (verse 28), and it bragged over the beatings of an individual. “Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes and Balaam saw the angel that was the Lord standing on the road , with an armed sword in his palm. Balaam bowed his head. and then bowed his face, and then revered” (31).

Donkey saved the life of the man by stepping away from the way. The angels of the Lord instructed him to only speak the words that God has instructed him to say on behalf of Israel (verses 33-35).

In Moab, the reigning king Balak was king of Moab. King Balak Balaam in the direction of Behemoth Baal and instructed Balaam to curse the Israelites (Numbers 22:41). 

After offering 14 sacrifices on seven altars, The false prophet spoke and rather than a curse offered an offering of blessings on Israel: “But why should I curse those whom God did not curse? And how can I threaten those whom Jehovah has not threatened?” (Numbers 23:20 ).

Assuming that Balaam was scared at the sights of the camp of Israel, Balak, the king Balak sent him to a different site in Pisgah. Once again, the false prophet sacrificed 14 animals, he spoke, and a blessing was spoken: “Look, I have received the command to bless: it has blessed, and I cannot turn it back” (Numbers 23 20).

Balak tried again and led his prophet on a trip to the highest point of the sand. Balak sacrificed 14 animals and then was praised Israel with a new blessing with the words: “How lovely are your tents, O Jacob, and your dwelling places, O Israel!” (Numbers 24:5). 

Then he offered yet another prophecy for the coming of Christ, saying, “I will see him, but not now; I will behold him well, but not too near: a star will rise out of Jacob, and a sceptre will rise out of Israel; Who will break the sides of Moab, who will bring down all the rioters” (Numbers 24:17).

In a state of incomprehensible rage at those who belong to Israel In his rage, the false prophet counsels Moabites to convince Israel to worship idols (Numbers 31:16). 

He was aware that the moment Israel did not follow his advice, God would not protect the children of Israel. The Moabites followed the advice of they believed the prophet falsely warned them, and Israel was apostasy and worshipped Baal and committed adultery with Midianite women. The result was that God caused a disaster, and 24000 men were devastated (Numbers 25:1-9).

This day, God has warned his congregation in the final days to beware of false prophets, like Balaam, who are more focused on pursuing their own agendas and not the common good. 

These false teachers propagate sexual immorality and sinful impulses, and many of them go off the rails: “But I have a few things to say against you because there are many among you who follow the teachings of Balaam, who taught Balak to the Israelites.

Taught to put forth a cause of stumbling, that they may eat the sacrifices of idols, and commit adultery” (Revelation 2:14). In these cases, we are warned to stay clear. Fortunately, the Lord promises to protect those who follow.

How did Balaam die

Joshua, in his final speech, also mentions the subject.
